Third Sunday in Advent ?Overcome with Joy?

December 14, 2016

Preaching on the Old Testament reading Isaiah 35:1-10 Pastor Brook Thelander chose as his theme despair.

He said, “We must encourage each other not to become spiritually discouraged or despairing. Grief, lack of employment, terminal illness— despair might seem a viable option. It is the same for people who hunger, suffer from war, fears and uncertainties or aging, temptation to give up.

Today is Gaudete, telling us to Rejoice, as the Church of Jesus Christ responds to all the world not to despair. Spiritual renewal can refresh our hearts even in the desert. We gather here today to open our hearts to the life-giving Word of God. We trust our hopes, not our fears, and trust our God, not our circumstances.
