Palm Sunday at Epworth
March 20, 2016
"Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Hosanna in the highest!"
Epworthies shouted in our Palm Sunday procession.
The service began in the southwest corner of the church property for the Liturgy of the Palms which included the reading from Luke 19:29-40 recounting Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and being greeted by the cheering throng waving palm branches.
In the church Narthex Pastor Thelander proclaimed: "Open the gates of justice!"
And the people replied: "I will enter and tell the Lord how thankful I am."
We processed into the sanctuary as the cantors sang "All glory, laud and honor, to Thee, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring."
After strewing the church aisle with palms we sang "Ride on, Ride on in Majesty" before the mood of the service took a sharp turn with the responsive reading of the Passion of Our Lord from the Gospel of Luke. As on that first Palm Sunday, people who shortly before had been shouting "Hosanna!" now cried out "Crucify Him!"
The service concluded with Holy Communion and the beautiful hymn "My Song is Love Unknown."
